David,

Your article was amazing in detail and gave me a great escape for several days durng my lunch break. I am heading to Kauai in April with my family, but only for a week. As soon as I get one more week of vacation, I'm going to spend it as you did living the Kalalau. I can only hope to have a small portion of the experiences that you shared. Thank you brother!

if you read my posting for june 19 and 20 these where actually posted about my first trip to the Kalalau in october of 2004 10 days in the valley. totaly awsom' on my return trip in september of 2008 with plans of 6 weeks in the valley. long story short right after space rock my travling companion slipped and tumbled down the left side of the trail we thought she had broken her lower leg, after leaving her as comfortable as possible still down over the hill i returned to the trailhead ariving just before dark, when rescue arived at KEES Beach i was informed that they did not make night rescues and that i could not go back in either. My sweatheart spent the night down over the side of the mountain not knowing when help was coming. She was air lifted out the next morning taken to Wilcox Medical where everything turned out verywell, I post this report to emphazise the fact that that this can be a very dangerous trail please proceed with caution, take your time, watch your step and enjoy, I really hope to return this year or next to complete my extended stay journey, stay safe, love one another, and enjoy life

Wonderful shot of Na Pali -- sure would like to paint it!

Just thought I'd let you know that your photo of the "Myna Bird" looks like a shama thrush. It definitely is not a myna. You may want to correct this.

Excellent acount of your journey through the 5 valleys into paradise. I took (dragged) my two oldest keiki into Kaulalau 3 years ago when they were 12 and 13. I wished I could stay longer, and I will next time. I'm hoping to go Kaulalau next year. Thanks again!

David,

This is very well written. I found Ron's CD on the net. It is quite nice flute music. http://cdbaby.com/cd/ronsaya

I helped some people a few days ago, one of who fell off the Kalalau trail and fortunately only broke a lower leg, although it took the KFD the better part of a day to get to her. The whole situation reminds me of "The Beach," very pretty, but also quite dangerous, and the whole story and how to get there seems to be spreading.

Another person mentioned to me there are people (surfers) who are powerboating into Kalalau beach and valley and leaving behind trash/cans that most hikers cannot bring in or out. I think this is a problem that needs to be stopped.

Anyway, thanks for your story. If you don't mind, I might like to repost it.

I'm not sure how I got to your site, but I'm really glad I did, and that I stayed to read. You capture so well the essence of a good backpacking adventure...the work and effort and occasional discomfort and pain...dealing with and learning to enjoy the weather...maybe a little fear...the payoff in breathtaking views of the natural world and semi-mystical experiences...the camaraderie around a campfire, sharing food, drink and music, accepting other people in all their eccentricities...the feeling that along the way, our "civilization" has forgotten or left behind an essential part of what it means to be human. After spending this hour reading, I almost feel as though I have had your experience on Kauai myself. Thank you.

I hiked Kalalau and stayed at the end of the trail for a month during a several month journey on Kauai. It changed my life so much for the better. Thank you for taking me back there with your story and pictures.
